Some of the key findings: First-generation students need to understand why college matters; the message that a college education can benefit the entire family is particularly salient; parents and family members should be involved early in the process; pressures to earn money conflict with the need to spend more time on academic work; and prior exposure to college life and access to college-based support services are extremely important.
