Title:Transfer access to elite colleges and universities in the United States: Threading the needle of the American dream
Date:Not Dated
Organization:Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
Short Description:While full-time community college enrollment is growing faster than enrollment at four-year schools, the opportunity to transfer to elite institutions is shrinking. Fewer than one of every 1,000 students at the nation’s most selective private institutions is a community college transfer, despite high rates of degree completions among students who manage to transfer from community colleges to elite colleges and universities.
Annotation:While full-time community college enrollment is growing faster than enrollment at four-year schools, the opportunity to transfer to elite institutions is shrinking. Fewer than one of every 1,000 students at the nation’s most selective private institutions is a community college transfer, despite high rates of degree completions among students who manage to transfer from community colleges to elite colleges and universities. Community college students with the lowest-socioeconomic status (SES) who transfer to elite institutions are more likely to graduate than low-SES students with similar characteristics who started at four-year schools. Together, highly selective institutions and community colleges have the potential to dramatically increase the number of low-SES transfer students by encouraging talented community college students to apply, raising awareness of financial aid, and working to diminish cultural barriers.
