Annotation:This briefing paper highlights several promising practices in promoting language acquisition, drawing examples primarily from California, Illinois, and Texas, states with longstanding immigrant populations and historically high numbers of immigrant children and families. Together, the five models featured in this paper have been replicated in 27 states and the District of Columbia and five countries. This briefing paper also provides a timely set of recommendations for foundations interested in supporting approaches that help immigrants and refugees learn English while also strengthening family functioning and economic well-being for LEP adults and children.
