Date:
January 2008
Organization:

Short Description:
Institutions need to work on fostering retention and student success
Annotation:
Report focuses mostly on strategies for engaging faculty and staff at postsecondary institutions in service of increasing retention and sucess. First part of report includes some general information on student retention and success. More 25% of students who enter a 4-year institution are marginally or minimally qualified for college. Aid is important but is only one factor in the picture of retentionand success. Loan burden for noncompleters is important. Low-income students at 4 year institutions who are aiming for a BA are even more likely to leave school after their second year than after their first year. Institutions need to be the service providers to address retention and smart borrowing. --MS
